The Purdue University, Alpha Xi, chapter of Phi Kappa Sigma was founded on November 25, 1904, and we were granted our charter on November 25, 1905. We purchased our fraternity house, the previous Mayor Chauncey’s mansion, in 1911 and have lived in the same house ever since. We have remolded multiple times since then including our major expansion of the “new side” of the house in the mid 1960’s.
Some notable alumni include Roger B Chaffee and Edward M. Purcell. Chaffee graduated Purdue University a brother of Phi Kappa Sigma and was later chosen as one of three astronauts to take part in the Apollo 1 mission. He died on the launchpad in 1967 while preparing for the Apollo 1 flight. Purcell was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics in 1952. He and a colleague received the award for discovering the technology that became the basis for MRI, one of the most important medical advances of the 20th century.
